dry needling

Dry needling Mind Your Motion physiotherapy and manual therapy Amsterdam

Dry Needling is a treatment method that is applied from physiotherapy to quickly and effectively remedy pain complaints from a muscle (myofascial trigger points).

Myofascial trigger points are painful string-shaped spasms in a muscle, these are described from the theory of the so-called Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS). A trigger point can cause movement restriction, stiffness, loss of strength and pain. MPS is the most frequently missed diagnosis in patients with chronic pain. By inserting an acupuncture needle, puncturing a painful part (trigger point) of the muscle, a muscle contraction (twitch) will often take place that almost immediately "releases" the local muscle spasm.

For which complaints is dry needling suitable?

  • Pain in a muscle, with or without radiation to other parts of the body

  • Movement limitations and/or stiffness in associated joints

  • Decreased strength in the involved muscle(s)

  • Pain avoiding behavior; you're going to move 'differently'

  • Tingling in arm or leg, headache, dizziness, sweating

 How can trigger points arise?

  • Acute, due to a wrong movement or an accident

  • Chronic: due to a prolonged incorrect posture

  • Prolonged overload of arm, neck and/or shoulder

  • Damage to tissue such as a meniscus or a hernia

  • Prolonged absence of movement, e.g. due to plaster cast

  • Psychological factors such as stress, depression, restlessness and fatigue

  • Foot deformities or differences in leg length

  • Chronic infections and allergies

  • Sleep deprivation, tight clothing or belt, wearing a backpack

Dry needling alone as a therapy is insufficient to prevent complaints from returning in the future. This therapy is always combined with manual therapy and exercise therapy.
